Snook: These hard-fighting linesiders are a favorite among night anglers. Snook love to ambush prey around structure, so we'll be working docks, mangroves, and bridge pilings. They're known for explosive strikes and powerful runs that'll test your drag. The cooler months are prime time for big snook, with fish over 40 inches not uncommon.
Tarpon: The "silver king" is a bucket-list catch for many anglers. These prehistoric fish can grow over 100 pounds and are famous for their acrobatic leaps when hooked. Night fishing often produces some of the biggest tarpon of the year. We'll target them around bridges and in deeper channels where they feed on mullet and other baitfish.
Cero Mackerel: These speedy predators are often more active at night. Ceros are known for their blistering runs and sharp teeth, so we'll use wire leaders when targeting them. They're excellent eating fish, with firm, white meat that's great for grilling.
Crevalle Jack: Pound-for-pound, few fish fight harder than a jack. These bulldogs of the sea will test your arms and your gear. Night fishing often produces some of the biggest jacks, as they move into shallower water to hunt. Be ready for screaming runs and powerful dives.
Black Grouper: While not as common as our other targets, hooking into a big black grouper at night is always a possibility. These structure-loving fish can grow to over 100 pounds and are known for their powerful initial run to get back to their rocky lairs. They're also one of the best-tasting fish in the sea, so landing one of these is a real prize.

Black grouper are the heavyweight champions of the reef, often topping 20 pounds with some monsters pushing 100. These ambush predators lurk around structure in 60-250 feet of water. They're most active at dawn and dusk. Grouper put up a tenacious fight, trying to dive back into their rocky lairs. The meat is sweet and flaky - a true delicacy. Winter and spring are prime seasons before summer spawning closures. To land a big black grouper, use heavy tackle and stout leaders. I like dropping live bait right into their strike zone. When you feel the thump, reel fast and pull hard to turn their head before they can get back to their hole. It's a true test of angler versus fish.
Cero mackerel are sleek, torpedo-shaped fish that typically run 5-10 pounds around Key Biscayne. Look for them near reefs and wrecks in 30-60 feet of water. They're fast swimmers with razor-sharp teeth, so use wire leaders. Ceros hit hard and make blistering runs. Spring through fall is prime time, with peak action in summer. These fish are prized for their firm, white meat - great for the grill or as sashimi. To catch ceros, I like trolling small lures or live bait. Keep an eye out for diving birds, which often mark feeding schools. When you find them, it can be non-stop action. Just be careful handling them - those teeth are no joke.
Crevalle jacks are the bruisers of the flats, usually 5-15 pounds but capable of topping 30. These aggressive predators hunt in schools, corralling bait against the surface. Look for diving birds to find the action. Jacks fight like freight trains - all power, no quit. They're not great eating, so we release them. Spring and fall are best as they move through the area. To catch jacks, I like using topwater lures or live bait. Cast into the feeding frenzy and hang on tight. Pro tip: when you see a jack eat your bait, wait to feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook. These guys often miss on the first pass but come back for more.
Snook are a prized catch around Key Biscayne, typically ranging from 5-15 pounds. These ambush predators hang out near mangroves, dock pilings, and other structures in shallow waters. They're most active at night, which makes our trips ideal for targeting them. Snook put up an incredible fight, with acrobatic jumps and powerful runs. Their firm white meat is also delicious. Spring and fall are prime seasons as snook move between inshore and offshore waters. When fishing for snook, I always tell folks to use a heavy leader - their gill plates are like razors and can slice through lighter line. Cast your bait or lure right up against structure and be ready for an explosive strike. Landing a big snook under the stars is an experience you won't forget.
Tarpon are the silver kings of the flats, capable of growing over 200 pounds. Around Key Biscayne, we usually see them in the 40-80 pound range. These prehistoric fish roll on the surface, gulping air to supplement their oxygen. You'll find them in channels, around bridges, and on the flats. Spring is prime tarpon season as they migrate through. Hooking one is just the start - be ready for spectacular aerial displays as they try to throw the hook. Tarpon have rock-hard mouths, so setting the hook takes practice. I always tell folks to "bow to the king" - drop your rod tip when they jump to prevent the line from breaking. It's all catch-and-release for these giants. The thrill is in the fight, not the meat.
